UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA BARBARA

HONG KONG STUDENT ASSOCIATION (HKSA)

About

Founded in 2005, the Hong Kong Student Association (HKSA) is an on campus social club that unites overseas Hong Kongers in the United States. We connect with other Hong Kong student unions with our sister schools in the UC system and created this Southern California Union (U852), including schools from: UCLA, UC Irvine, UCSD and USC. The mission of our club is to promote the Hong Kong culture and create a space for students from Hong Kong to social and connect with each other. Each year, there are different cultural events held within the school such as our annual hot pot night, Cantonese singing contest, the Lunar New Year Night Market and more! These are all organised with a goal to promote the Hong Kong Culture as well as to provide a platform for our fellow overseas students to connect with home.

Work Experience

As a first year student at UCSB (2019-2020), I joined the Hong Kong Student Association and was an intern for Public Relations (PR). At first, I mostly helped with finding sponsors and connecting with other UC schools for promotion (we do have a discount card for restaurants around our school, and this card provides a shared discount with other UC schools as well -- so when we go to designated restaurants in LA, those discounts are negotiated by the PR at UCLA). Then, I was able to help with the clubs' social media. Before my "takeover" for their social media account, UCSB HKSA rarely post things and only post when there are upcoming events. However, I suggested to post more regularly (and blessed that I started doing this, because here comes COVID-19) about Hong Kong culture and maybe some slangs that we can teach others about. And gradually, we started posting more cultural things on social media and got more views, followers and interactions with our page! But I was still not satisfied with the overall look of our page, it does not look consistent at all and somehow looked kind of messy. So for the year 2020-2021, I applied for both PR and Publicity (essentially they're both the same thing haha), and after discussions with the current president and my other fellow publicity, we finally came up with an overall pattern of the social media page and tah-dah our weekly slang layout is consistent and our weekly funny vines is also consistent!! The page looks much better than what we had before, but I believe there are more improvements to be made in the near future!!

Event Posters

Besides designing logos for the club, my other job is to create posters and instagram stories for the club. These are the artworks that I created for events held by our clubs or other collaborative events with other on campus organizations.
