GPHD 25

An introduction to practical graphic design, where we learn about the foundations of design. All designs are actually based on point, line and plane. As long as we make good use of these lines, along with design principles like GESTALT - good designs can be created that are pleasing to the eye.

Design Elements

We worked on this project for a week or so where we would have to create four different designs, using only squares and circles, for each word: isolation, interaction, scale, rythm, absence, texture, hierarchy, pattern and motion

Design Principles - GESTALT

The GESTALT theory are principles in design which means:  Proximity, Similarity, Continuity, Closure, Figure/ Ground, and Symmetry & Order. Again, we were only able to use circles and squares to create the designs.

Point Line Plane

We spent around 2-3 weeks in class working on this project of Point, Line and Plane. A point is a circle, when one point meets the other, it creates a line, and when lines come together, it forms plane. With the very basis of design, we would have to find an interesting architecture, and create an abstract design of it using the words point, line and plane.

Messaging Compositions

Building on the skills that we learnt, now we would have to pick a word and design according to the connotation of the word. The words that I picked are: Lazy, Erratic, Modern and Heroic. The inspiration from lazy was from frying an egg, when the yolk was poked through and started to drip. The idea from Erratic was from weird, dark anime where random things are happening. The inspiration of modern came from skateboarding, the shards are like mini skateboards raining form the sky. Lastly, the inspiration for heroic came from how people traditional thought of heroes as male figures but I wanted to show how women can also be heroic, breaking through the triangular hierarchy.
