Ethics of Nanomedicine

1. Ethics in Research and Development

Animals are used for clinical trials before trying them on humans. However, is this really fair to the lives of animals? Well, it is understandable that before products are used on humans, it has to be tested by animals first to ensure the safety of the drug. Unfortunately, there are still uncertainty in drugs that are in Phase I, which is unfair to the animals that sacrificed for human's needs. In addition, substances that works in animals does not mean that they work on humans, it might be time for scientists to develop a way to ensure the safety of drugs as well as protecting animals rights.

2. Ethics in Medical Application

As new nanomedicine emerge into the market, the prices would be rocket high as it first goes to the manufacturer's patents. As a result, family that are economic could not afford to buy the drugs and by the time the price of the drug goes down, new updated drugs come out for stronger viruses and old ones might not be as affective as the new ones. Another issue is the "abuse" of drug, the wrong way of using nanomedicine. For instance, some nanomedicines related to neurology is used for the reduction of memory loss. However, some people might take it to enhance their memory, making them more intelligent.
